Halloween Party 2008

posted by nblevins on Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Well, Halloween has come and gone this year.  Even though this is most likely my favorite holiday of the year, I managed to allow it to totally slip by without doing all that much.  It is really disappointing.  Generally speaking, there are a number of things that must occur in order to me to consider a Halloween successful:

Horror Movies

I must watch horror movies and I mean lots and lots of them.  Of those watched, they have go to range from creepy / scary like the Grudge to the bloody / gory such as Saw, and, finally, outright funny such as Evil Dead.  The Horror Movie is a staple of every Halloween as they clearly set the  mood for the season.

Staple Cartoons

Every Halloween, at least 2 cartoons must be watched - The Garfield Halloween Special and It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.   These cartoons are a must because they have been a tradition since I have been a child.  Every year, Mom and Dad ensured that we sat down as a family and got to hear "Heeeeeeyyyyy,  Kiiidddddsss!" or witness the Beagle rising from the pumpkin patch.

Binky

Mischief

One of my favorite aspects of Halloween is getting into trouble (or some semblance thereof).  This can range from simple tricks instead of treats, trying to elaborately set up situations to freak people out, or, my personal favorite, rolling people's yards.  Halloween is many things, but, more than anything else, it is a time to try to pull off your best pranks.

Dave lucked out this year as I was too busy to drive to his house on Halloween night.  Maybe next year... ;)  Also, I realize that Gabe has been in his house for around 2 or 3 years so far and has yet to be visited by the paper fairy...  hmm...

The Halloween Party

Of course, the most important part of any Halloween is getting together with your friends, dressing up like fools, and having a good time.  This year, we were able to have our party on the day after Halloween.

Some of our distinguished guests...

The party was a great success.  We were able to enjoy some of the staple events, such as the home-made yearly Halloween Movie, the blindfolded - strobe lighted piñata bash, and the viewing of the pumpkins.  In addition to this, we were able to enjoy a nice viewing of the My Little Ponies Movie, in which, an unnamed guest whispered to me, "For the love of God, please save me from this movie.  I am starting to like it?!?!?"

So, thanks to all those who attended the party.  We had a blast.  I am looking forward to next year!  For all the Halloween Party Pictures, feel free to visit my flickr photoset.

Happy Halloween!  Until next time...

P.S.  - I am considering posting the Halloween Videos after some HEAVY editing.  What do you all think?  Any interest?

I hate the paper fairy, has she ever been to your house. Won't you be in a brand new one next Halloween? And those specials are must sees, not the My Little Pony though.

Heavy editing?

I'm curious what heavy editing you would consider for the movies. What's so dangerous that we couldn't release them to the interwebs as they are? :P

... don't answer that online.

In all seriousness, we probably do need to find the right codec for these movies. Even after converting the 20-minute Untitled Halloween Movie I: The First Movie to WMV, it was still like 600 megabytes.

Paper Fairy

@Gabriel - Well, even though the paper fairy does love her tree coverage, I have known her to be a rather resourceful individual. In fact, I remember rolling some's house in High School who warned everyone to keep away from her "evil dog." So, to make a point, we rolled her house and the dog... lol. And by "we", I mean the paper fairy. So, the paper fairy is more of a fan of pranks than anything else... lol

Other "paper fairy" pranks include, flamingo-ing people's yards, poli-signing people's yards (nothing like waking up w/ 1,000 "vote for x" signs stuck in your yard, vasiline on doorhandles, filling unlocked cars with foam peanuts, or, my personal favorite, moving a person's outhouse onto the roof of their house... Of course, nothing too destructive...

I was not part of the last one, but it is still one of my favorite stories.

Dave, actaully had a great story about the moving of signs and the theft of a cement duck that cracks me up as well.

@Dylan - Yeah, I have to figure out some way to make them small and streamable. I almost fear to put up a video b/c it will destory my bandwidth allowance. Maybe a good time to move to Amazon's magi... err... cloud storage.

In order for the video to be viewable online you're going to have to make it small anyway. You don't have the requirement that it look good on your massive 50" tv or whatever it is. It just has to be tolerable in a browser window. As for bandwidth, well, youtube ftw... and if not that, there's plenty of other view storage places.

Video

Yeah, we're looking at 20 minutes for the first video and 1 hour for the second... YouTube has a 10 minute limit, but they will split a video into parts if you use their uploader.

I could post it on my server if it was very small (I have 10gb disk space, but 200gb monthly transfer that I'm only using about 5% of). And if the podcast has taught me anything, no one will ever watch it.
